Mount Tammany Summit Hike

Overall Thoughts

Driving & Parking

Parking @ the trailhead is free and relatively easy. There are two parking lots right off of Route 80, with the Mt Tammany Red Dot Trailhead Parking and the Appalachian Trail Parking. Parking usually fills up by midday in the summers, so make sure to get there relatively early. The drive itself is really beautiful at the end, with nice views of the winding Delaware River as you make your way up.

Hike

The trail is well-marked and I was able to navigate it without an offline map or GPX route. This is definitely a challenging hike with difficult rock scrambles and talus climbs sprinkled throughout. There is one outlook during the start of the Red Dot Trail where you can rest a bit and get a view of the Delaware Water Gap. The view at the summit does make up for the challenge and the picturesque Dunnfield Creek and AT on the descent is worth it. For those that are fit and unburdened with the physical challenge, the trail itself is fun to navigate.

In the summers there are a lot of dragonflies, beetles, and other insects as you near the summit. I also saw a black bear (though it didn’t see me).
